Buri Gaadiyaa Adam Zahir Resigns

Good News
Prior to the separation of police and armed forces in 2005, Adam Zahir headed the notorious National Security Services (NSS).
He has faced numerous accusations over police abuse. Most recently the family of Hussein Salah, who died after being taken into police custody last year, threatened to sue Zahir for negligence over the death, which they say resulted from police beatings.
Advisor to President Nasheed and former attorney general Hassan Saeed has recently hit out against Zahir by repeatedly accusing him of corruption and criminal activity.more

WONG: A former political prisoner has defeated Asia's longest-serving ruler. Mohamed Nasheed won the first multiparty election in the Maldives.

Maldives Rejects Gay Yoom in Election

Time
The Indian Ocean island nation of the Maldives has weathered cyclones and tsunamis, but never before has it experienced sweeping change of the sort ushered in on Oct. 28. By the next day, it was clear that President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom — whose 30-year reign marked him as Asia's longest serving leader — had been toppled in the country's first-ever democratic elections by a man whom he had imprisoned just a decade ago. After coming second in multi-party polls earlier in October, 41-year-old Mohamed Nasheed beat Gayoom in a run-off contest by a nearly 10% margin — a gulf wide enough for the oft-dictatorial Gayoom to concede defeat over state radio even before all the ballots were counted. more

History is made, people power prevails, Dictator Golhaboa is ousted

Wathan Edhey Gothah presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) secured more than 54%, with 96,044 votes and the dictator got 45.8% with 81,368 votes. This is the provisional results after 399 ballot boxes had been counted with just 4 more remaining which amounts to less than 1%. Bye Bye Golhaa!

Will Dictator Golhaaboa ratify the constitutional amendments?

DO Review
Last month Maldives Dictator Golhaabo said in one of his addresses that the ratification of the constitution will be the fastest process of all implying that he will do so quite swiftly. However, as time goes, we are noticing that he is not very keen on it and has obviously requested certain changes to be made, including immunity from prosecution. Now we are hearing that the election deadline might even be extended to allow Golhaabo to fiddle with the constitution. read & comment

125 million rufiya (US$10 million) Paid to Maldives Dictator Golha Boa's Cronies

Adduvas Exclusive Loan Star Report 2006
DO Blast from past
An Exclusive Report published on Adduvas magazine,27 December 2005, Translated by Maldives Culture editors, 8 January 2006, Photos and contact information added by Maldives Culture and Dhivehi Observer. Adduvas examines President Gayyoom's special assistance loan account (Maldives Monetary Authority Acc. No. 2060) and the soft loans granted from this source. It is difficult to understand why the public treasury of the government has become the private bank of a certain group of people. Have these the people faced exceptional circumstances that warrant the granting of a presidential special assistance loan? When we identified the people receiving these loans, it seems only highly-placed officials face special circumstances. more

Dictator's top cronies will cost us 3.873 million Rufiyaa a month.60% pay rise for Ministers, State Ministers and Deputy Ministers

Dhivehiobserver News
Male' - The Maldives Dictator has increased the salaries and allowances of his close circle officials by 60% reports say. Ministers will now get Mrf 42,500, State Ministers Mrf 32,000 and Deputy Ministers pay will get Mrf 20,500. In addition to this, they will also get a 15,000 allowance on top of the salary. This is typical of the Dictator as this increase in salary for his close circle is totally out of proportion to what an average Maldivian earns, which is in the range of Mrf 2000 - 4000 as an average monthly salary. Most people have to get part time jobs to make ends meet. In addition to the ministers, the Dictator's advisors, including his brother Hameed, will get a Minister's pay. They were supposed to have been relieved of their ministerial duties but are still very much in the game. The Dictator has one of the largest cabinets in the world. 20 ministers, 13 state ministers and 44 deputy ministers. In addition, there are 5 special advisors and 3 ambassadors who are paid a minister's salary. Total monthly payout to the Dictator's top cronies is a staggering 3.783 million rufiyaa (approx. 295,000 US Dollars a month).
