Dhagandey is still held in Dhoonidhoo prison without charge

Popular Addu reformist and photo journalist Mohamed Saeed (Dhagandaa) was arrested on 1st May from his island and brought to Dhoonidhoo prison. It has since been more than 4 weeks and he remains in detention without being charged. According to our sources he was initially arrested in relation to a demonstration by the students of Irushaadhiyya school in April, news of which he covered. more

The continued detention of Dhagandey and the arbitrary arrest of other reformist including Saleem Ali from Huvadhoo yesterday is a clear sign that the Maldives Dictator knows no other means to remain in power but by brute force without any regard for the rule of law.

Article 15 - (1)(b) of the Maldives Constitution states that "No person shall be arrested or detained except as provided by law. No person shall be detained for a period exceeding twenty-four hours without being informed of the grounds of arrest or detention."

And, Article 15 - (1) (d) states "No person charged with an offence shall be kept in detention for a period exceeding seven days except as provided by law."
According to legal experts, in view of the above two clauses of the constitution, arbitrary arrests and indefinite detention is in fact against the law and can only be classed as an act of treason. But of course, the Maldives Dictator is 'above the law'.

The high security grave of Hussain Salah who was murdered by the Maldives Police (Golha Force)

Photo News
Everyone knows the truth about the killing of Hussain Salah by the Maldives Police (Golha Force) but as usual it appears that the chapter is almost closed now and no one is willing to get the murderers to justice and stop such crimes from being committed in the future. Salah was beaten to death and his dead body thrown in the sea. To cover up the crime, Police tried to bury him as soon as he was found but public anger and family intervention did eventually delay the cover-up attempt. However, after the so-called post-mortem, his body was buried in Male' against his family wishes amid high security. His grave was constantly monitored by video cameras and several police agents were roaming the area, even after the burial. So, isn't it obvious that the police are trying to hide something? Incidentally, where is the final post-mortem report by the 'one and only' Dr. Alwis of Sri Lanka? view photos

Demented Golha boa trying to arrest key reformists from Addu

Breaking
Addu - 14:22 - Sources in Addu are reporting that Golhaa Force are looking for key MDP reformists in Addu and have been to their homes. It is believed that this is in relation to the recent visit of Golhaabo to Addu during which most of the Adduans criticized him and did not welcome him to the Atoll. However, according to reformists in Addu, they did not plan any activity to heckle Golhaabo during his visit but some members displayed banners and put some graffiti on the walls, which obviously has upset the 'Demented One'. Golhaa is also very upset that late Hussain Salah's family refused to meet with him and thinks that senior MDP members in Addu might have played a role in that. Golhaa Force is specifically looking for Zahid (Dhiraagu), Sobe', Habeeb and Hussain Shahid..

Maldives: World's Secret Dictatorship

The archipelago of the Maldives in the middle of the Indian Ocean is a natural spectacle. Over the past 30 years, it has become one of the most thriving and sought-after holiday destinations in the world. It is the economic lifeblood of the Maldives, contributing to more than 30% of the GDP, accounting for 70% of foreign currency earned and 40% percent of the government's budgetary resources.
The regime of Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom in the Maldives is the world's only "secret" dictatorship. Gayyoom has been in power for the last 28 years and has no intention of relinquishing power or reforming his brutal methods. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International have frequently raised the issue of Gayyoom's methods and practices. The international media has also highlighted these concerns but to no avail.Key characteristics of this tyranny are, rampant nepotism, suppression of any form of political opposition, complete control of media and communication, arbitrary arrests, torture and death in custody, endemic corruption and misuse of public funds, intimidation of the parliament reducing it to a rubberstamp body, ballot rigging and total mismanagement of public services. Fahala Saeed sentenced to life imprisonment Appeal Begins

Minivan Daily Journalist, Abdulla (Fahala) Saeed's appeal against drug offences began at the High Court on Sunday. Fahala, known for articles critical of the government and their use of violence, was sentenced to life imprisonment in April 2006 for possession with intent to supply heroin. At Sunday’s appeal, Fahala’s lawyer Husnu-al-Suood argued the charges were false and a “deliberate attempt to hurt him.”Suood asked the judge to consider why the drugs were not found during the first search, but inside Fahala’s trouser pockets, only after he had stripped naked, and his trousers had been taken away by police and brought back.“It took the police five minutes to find four packets of drugs in Fahala’s pocket. This gives them ample time to plant the drugs in his pocket more

Stop Human Rights Abuse and Torture in Maldives

DO QUICK GUIDE THE TRUTH
The terror continues ..... arbitrary arrests and detention without charge....
Help the campaign by exposing the regime through your contacts, MPs and media connections? International pressure does make a difference!

Maldives Dictator did nothing to help the victims of the recent floods but wants to pocket aid money..

The bastard has done nothing to help the hundreds of victims in the islands that were flooded over the past week and they are left to fend for themselves. They are in really desperate conditions but look at this. Now Golhaabo is writing to world leaders and aid agencies pleading them to help. What he wants is aid in hard currency, so he can transfer the money to his personal accounts around the world. Almost every year, these islands are flooded but Golhaabo has done nothing to protect them, so that he can beg the world for aid money which goes straight to his personal accounts. Golhaabo is planning to visit Huvadhoo Atoll, worst affected by the floods, for a photo-shoot to send to the international community. The campaign to get money has already started. Relief Web reported yesterday "The President appeals for international assistance in helping the victims of the unprecedented sea swells which hit the Maldives on the 15th of this month".

Maldives Dictator Golha Boa fails to defend the country again

Maldives Dictator Golha Boa has once again begged for military assistance from India in trying to seize a strayed vessel that entered Maldives territory yesterday. The Maldives' coast guard could not bring the situation under control and air cover was given by the Indian military. "This is quite pathetic, a small vessel with a handful of people has posed such a threat to the country. The coast guard is obviously not bold enough to deal with a situation on their own and had to rely on India, once again," said a military analyst. "It also shows further that when ever the Maldives' Dictator finds himself in trouble of this sort, common nouns are repeated: Guns, Tamil and Indian Military," he added further. What is obvious from all this is that the Maldives Dictator has no military power to defend the country, and the little power he has is used to attack his own people and control those who oppose his rule. Remember how this same coast guard vessel attacking a small fishing Dhoni in November last year whilst it was ferrying a group of Addu reformists to Male'.So, this is a good time to ask ourselves the real question. Shouldn't we be worried as an independent nation, about the total reliance on the military might of India to defend ourselves, and to protect our territory?
It will come as no surprise to us if in the end this whole incident will somehow be linked to democratic reform movement. You can never underestimate the cunningness of a desperate and ailing dictator.

GAYYOOM(Golha Boa) THINKS HE IS A GOD"A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right" Thomas Paine "

Editorial(DO)
Gayyoom(Golha Boa) thinks he is God and we are all his servants" was the description of Gayyoom by a former cabinet member. "No, no, he really believes that and all that he does for us, big or small is out of the good of his heart, his mercy on us, not because he has to" the minister reiterated his assertion. Many Maldivians fear Gayyoom not because they believe he is God but because they have witnessed or personally experienced ill-treatment, imprisonment and torture for opposing Gayyoom. Perhaps many believed that he is immortal but the tsunami waves upset Gayyoom hugely by bringing coconuts to the courtyard of his Grand Palace. Now, if he was God, he would not have allowed that to happen. read more

Special Majlis decides to lower voting age to 18 for the upcoming referendum.

A majority of the Special Majlis has today voted in favour of lowering the voting age to 18 for the upcoming referendum on the system of government. 57 members voted in favour whilst most of Dictator's members abstained, in addition to former speaker Abbas. Despite claims by the Dictator that he was now in favour of lowering the voting age, it is apparent that his own unelected MPs were not in agreement with him. Political analysts think that this historical development will further strengthen the stand of the opposition who are in favour of parliamentary system of government.

Sandhaanu Didi back in MDP

Local News
Popular reformist Ahmed Ibrahim Didi (better known as Sandhaanu Didi) rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) last Tuesday. Didi, long with his two colleagues was sentenced for life in prison on 2001 by the Maldives Dictator for producing the famous internet dissident magazine "Sandhaanu" which was highly critical of Gayyoom's regime. Despite being a heart-patient he was kept in solitary confinement without proper medical care for 13 months. He was sentenced to life but was later released due to local and international pressure in 2005. Didi initially joined MDP on his release but later defected to Adhaalath Party. It is believed that his return to MDP is mainly due to consultation with his colleagues and because he wishes to be more active in the democratic movement in the country. MDP's acting president Zaki said "it is always a pleasure for us to welcome back a hero of the Maldives' reform movement back into our camp. He will be an immense asset to the party".

An innocent taxi driver walking along Maaveyo Magu was picked up by the NSS on the 13th Aug. He was handcuffed & blindfolded. Then some one started beating him. MDP To Meet Election Commissioner

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party have requested a meeting with Election Commissioner K D Ahmed Manik, who they accuse of bias against them. Mr Manik leads the commission responsible for guaranteeing independence and transparency at national elections. But Manik was appointed by President Gayoom and is a member of the government’s Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and the MDP claim this undermines his neutrality. The MDP have requested a meeting after Mr Manik wrote to the party to censure them for three separate events in April; a protest outside the Special Majlis on April 9; unrest after an MDP meeting held on April 14 at Kalaafaanu School; and unrest the same night near Hulhumeedhoo office while a DRP meeting was going on in Addu Atoll Maradhoo Irshadiyya School. The MDP deny causing unrest at the party meettings on April 14. The party’s National Executive Committee and National Council will discuss how to respond to the letters. But the MDP has already decided to seek a meeting with Mr Manik.
