Eevan Naseem was beaten to death by 12 policemen whilst serving a sentence in Maafushi Jail 4 years ago on 19th September. Evan's mother has been detained several times because she complained about the murder. Similar incidents went unreported in Maldives for many years prior to this incident. It's been 4 years since Evan was murdered and we are hearing that his killers are being released by the Maldives Dictator Gayyoom. MDP marks 20 September as day against torture

The Maldivian Democratic Party held a number of functions and a general assembly (on 19, 20 and 21 September) to mark 20 September as Day against Torture in Maldives. In 2003, 20 September proved to be a turning point in the political history of Maldives. On that fateful day thousands of people gathered on the streets of Male', the capital to vent their anger and frustration over the custodial torture/killing of a young prisoner (Eevan Naseem) and the subsequent shooting to death of four unarmed prisoners who were among scores protesting the killing. more

Referendum fraud case accepted by court

Male' - The case of referendum fraud submitted by Ali Sawad of S. Feydhoo has finally been accepted by the courts yesterday. "Initially they refused again but I called the Minister and a few minutes later the court called me and it was accepted", explained Sawad. This is the first of the many such cases which are being filed in the courts to prove that the August 18th referendum results were heavily rigged by Dictator Gayyoom. Sawad's case is about irregularities with voting procedures in his Atoll which he personally witnessed. Gayyoom's courts initially refused to accept any cases relating to the referendum but the new Justice Minister Muizzu appears to be a much more open minded person who is unwilling to bend the law to please his master.

In various stages of the August 18th public referendum to decide the governing pursuant system, numerous number of unacceptable activities were carried out, against the regulations passed out by the People's Special Majlis, regarding the referendum. The 11 member committee, formed by the Special Majlis to oversee the referendum, was unable to agree on the validity of the referendum results. The Majlis debate on 26th August on the issue on the demands of a petition by 25 members was concluded without reaching a decision. more

Bomb attacks raise new Indian fears

NEW DELHI - Indian officials have pointed their fingers at the "usual suspects" - Pakistan and Bangladesh - after the twin bomb blasts that killed at least 43 and injured more than 100 people this Sunday at India's cyber-city of Hyderabad. Indian intelligence agencies say a new terror channel has emerged that begins in Pakistan, passes through Male in Maldives and then goes to the southern Indian cities that have direct flights to Male. Maldives is an Islamic state, and in the recent past traditional moderate views have been tossed aside because of an increasingly insecure President Abdul Gayoom, who has begun patronizing madrassas (seminaries) that foment extremists. In my opinion, the upcoming referendum is not about the Maldivian people choosing a system of government. In a true sense this referendum is a YES/NO vote for the aging dictator. A win for Barulamaanee (Parliamentary System) will certainly be a step in the right direction to force the aging Dictator to resign and flee the country. The man has no intention at all to release the reins of power, as we have seen time and time again. He is not satisfied with almost 3 years of being in power and wants to go on despite the fact that he is physically and mentally unable to continue with the job. He has already made it public that regardless of the outcome of the referendum that he would continue to be a burden to the country and destroy the future of the nation by standing for office in 2008 elections. more

Hussain Saeed has been removed from his post as Addu atoll chief, and made chief of Malé atoll, following the shock cabinet resignation of his brother, former Attorney General Dr Hassan SaeedThe move is effectively a demotion. The Malé atoll office does not oversee the capital. It also moves Hussain Saeed away from the family’s power base in Addu. Moosa Rameez, an Atolls Ministry official has taken temporary charge of Addu, meaning a government loyalist will head the atoll office during the forthcoming constitutional referendum. Jameel and Dr Saeed resign from Dictator's cabinet

Male' -05/08/2007 16:05 - In the press conference, Dr. Saeed said in the press conference that Gayyoom's reform agenda had failed and that he should not be running for another presidential term. Jameel said that he wants to serve the people and not just once person (referring to the dictators).
Male' - Mohamed Jameel and Dr. Hassan Saeed has resigned from the Maldives Dictator cabinet this afternoon. It is believed that this was the outcome of an infighting in dictator's party DRP after Jameel walked out of the debate organised by Haveeru on the system of government held last night in Dharubaaruge. A press conference is currently underway. Dr. Hassan Saeed served the Dictator's cabinet as Attorney General, in addition to that he is also deputy leader of DRP. It is not known whether he has resigned from the party as well. Jameel served the cabinet as Justice Minister. The two were amongst the key new breed of the dictator's regime.
